Climate Challenge #2

The Beeswax Challenge, from Diana Geosano

The Beeswax Challenge, issued by Diana Geosano, will help in the quest to use less plastic in the kitchen...fewer ziplock bags, less plastic wrap, fewer plastic containers.

We have given each registered CP Climate member 3 beeswax wraps hand-made by Diana, Clare, Debbie and Terri. Say you have 1/2 an avocado, half a tomato or a chunk of parmesan cheese. Just roll it in a beeswax wrap, crimp the edges and pop it in the fridge. Have dinner leftovers? Put them in a bowl, cover with a beeswax wrap, crimp it around the edges and in the fridge it goes. If the wrap isn't sticky enough, you can secure with a rubber band.

How do you take care of them?

You wash them in soapy cold water and they will last for a year! Don't wash in warm water or, you guessed it, the wax will melt. And, of course, don't put them in the washing machine.

Is there anything you can't use them for?

It is not a good idea to put any kind of meat or fish in the wraps.

How will the challenge work?

Keep track of how many days each beeswax wrap was actually used in the fridge. For example: If each of three beeswax wraps was wrapped around something in the fridge for 10 days, that would be 30 days total.
